Job Description

Thumbtack helps millions of people confidently care for their homes.

Thumbtack is the one app you need to take care of and improve your home — from personalized guidance to AI tools and a best-in-class hiring experience. Every day in every county of the U.S., people turn to Thumbtack to complete urgent repairs, seasonal maintenance and bigger improvements. We help homeowners know which projects to do, when to do them and who to hire from our growing community of 300,000 local service businesses. If making an impact inspires you, join us. Imagine what we’ll build together.

About the Business Applications Team

The Business Applications org builds and operates the internal systems that keep Thumbtack running at scale: Salesforce-centered workflows, admin tooling, and the integrations that connect teams across the company. We're now expanding that foundation into a broader internal platform for AI-enabled work — shared APIs, reusable integration patterns, and safe, auditable capabilities for business-critical actions. We work directly with the business teams who depend on these systems, turning complex operational needs into software that's easier to run, extend, and automate responsibly.

The challenge

Agents can already take action inside Thumbtack's internal systems. The harder problem is making that trustworthy: giving business teams a way to configure what agents are allowed to do, review and correct their work, and see clearly what happened and why. Without that, automation stays stuck in pilots. This engineer owns the product surface that turns agent capability into something teams will actually rely on for business-critical work — and the services behind it.

What you’ll do

• Design and build the interfaces business teams use to configure agents, review their work, approve or correct actions, and understand what happened and why.

• Build observability and evaluation tooling that makes agent behavior legible — where it succeeded, where it failed, and whether a change made things better.

• Work across the stack, from React and TypeScript through service code and data models, owning features end to end through build, test, launch, and iteration.

• Partner directly with the business teams who use what you build; translate ambiguous operational problems into working software.

• Own the full lifecycle of your work, including monitoring and post-launch improvement.

In order to be successful, you must bring

• 3+ years of professional software engineering experience.

• Strong frontend skills with React and TypeScript, including complex application state and data-dense interfaces.

• Solid backend engineering ability. We use Go, PHP, and Python, and we expect strong engineers to pick up a new language.

• Working knowledge of relational and non-relational data stores (Postgres, DynamoDB, or similar).

• Real product judgment: you can look at a workflow, decide what to build, and say what to cut.

• Interest in the problems that come with non-deterministic systems — uncertainty, partial failure, and designing for human correction rather than assuming a correct answer every time.

• Proven ability to navigate ambiguity, close your own knowledge gaps, and deliver in an evolving environment.

Expected salary ranges

• For candidates living in Ontario and British Columbia, total cash compensation (base salary + variable pay, if applicable) range for the role is currently $154,700.00 - $200,200.00.

Actual offered salaries will vary and will be based on various factors, such as calibrated job level, qualifications, skills, competencies, and proficiency for the role.
